Consensual

Definition
Consensual (or “consent”) means “with mutual consent.” Within BDSM, it refers to voluntarily and consciously agreeing to all actions, dynamics, and agreements. Consent is the absolute basis of any safe and healthy BDSM experience.

Explanation of consensual

In the BDSM world, consent is one of the most important core concepts. While outsiders often think that BDSM amounts to coercion or abuse, the opposite is true: it is precisely the presence of conscious and voluntary consent that makes BDSM a game of trust, intimacy, and freedom.

Consensual means that all parties involved agree in advance (and during the game) to what will happen. This can vary from making clear agreements to using stop words and signals. However, consent goes beyond a simple “yes” or “no.” It also requires awareness: understanding what you are agreeing to, knowing the risks, and knowing that you can always withdraw your consent.

RACK and SSC

Within the international BDSM community, various frameworks have been developed to express this. Well-known examples are SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) and RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink). Both emphasize that consent is essential, but place the emphasis slightly differently: SSC focuses on safety and common sense, while RACK focuses on risk awareness and responsibility.

Consensual also means that there must be room for aftercare and evaluation. It is often only after the fact that it becomes clear how a game was actually experienced, and only with open communication does consent remain a living and dynamic process.
