Pet play

Definition
Pet play is a form of role play within BDSM in which an adult person takes on the role of an animal – such as a dog, cat, pony, puppy, or kitten – and their partner takes on the role of owner, trainer, or caretaker. It is about behavior, dynamics, and experience, not literal animal characteristics.

Explanation of pet play

Pet play is a versatile and often playful form of BDSM that focuses on fantasy, surrender, and role-playing. One participant – the “pet” – takes on the role of an animal and behaves accordingly: walking on all fours, sniffing, responding to commands, playing with toys, or being petted. The Dominant takes on the role of “owner,” “trainer,” or “handler,” providing structure, guidance, and safety.

This is not about realistic animal play, but about experiencing a different state of being. Many people find pet play a form of freedom: letting go of daily responsibilities, words, and control. The emphasis is on nonverbal communication, body language, and instinctive responses. For others, it offers an intense form of surrender: obedience, reward, training, and playful discipline.

There are different sub-forms:

Puppy play (playful, energetic, physical, uninhibited behavior)
Kitten play (softer, more sensual, more playful)
Pony play (more focused on discipline, elegance, show, and sometimes equipment)

Some pet players wear accessories such as ears, tails, a harness, or a collar, but this is not necessary. The experience is central, not the equipment. For many couples, pet play is a way to bring excitement, connection, and playfulness into their dynamic. It can be erotic, but it doesn’t have to be; many people experience pet play as emotional, relaxing, or intimate.

Safety & points of attention

Pet play may seem playful, but it requires clear agreements and awareness of physical and mental boundaries.

Walking on hands and knees can be stressful: use a soft surface. Avoid positions that are static for too long, especially in pony play.

Pay attention to accessories: anal plug-shaped tails, muzzles, or harnesses must fit properly and not cause painful pressure.

Because the roles are sometimes playful, obvious, or striking, it is important to only practice pet play in private places or at events where it is accepted. In public, it is inappropriate and can cause misunderstandings.
