Matriarchal refers to a system, structure, or dynamic in which women assume the leading, decision-making, and often dominant role, both socially, in relationships, and within power structures.
Explanation of matriarchal
The term “matriarchal” originates outside of BDSM and is traditionally used to describe societies or family structures in which women hold authority. In contrast to a patriarchal system, where men occupy the dominant position, power in a matriarchal structure lies with women.
Within BDSM, the concept takes on a more personal and relational meaning. A matriarchal dynamic here means that the woman consciously and centrally assumes the leading role, both on a practical and emotional level, and sometimes also sexually. This can manifest in decision-making, daily guidance, or deeper forms of power and submission within a relationship.
