Definition
Patriarchal refers to a social system or way of thinking in which men traditionally hold the most power, influence, and authority, both within families and within social, political, and cultural structures. Patriarchal is the opposite of matriarchal.
Explanation of Patriarchal
The word patriarchal is frequently used today in discussions about power, relationships, culture, and gender. But at its core, the term refers to a society in which men have historically held the dominant position.
For centuries, virtually all major social structures were built around male authority. Men made the laws, owned property, had access to education, and governed countries, while women were often dependent on their fathers or husbands. This pattern is reflected in many cultures, religions, and traditions.
This does not mean that every man was powerful or that every woman lived in oppression, but it does mean that the system as a whole was primarily organized around male norms and interests. Many things that were once taken for granted -such as women not being allowed to vote, work, or manage their own finances- stem from that patriarchal structure.
Changing Interpretations
Even today, the concept still plays a role, though its interpretation has changed. Some people still see patriarchal patterns in expectations surrounding masculinity, femininity, relationships, and sexuality. Think of ideas about who “should” be dominant, who should be emotionally available, or how men and women should behave.
Within BDSM, the topic sometimes comes up in conversations about power and role distribution. Some dynamics consciously align with traditional power structures, while others play with them or flip them on their head. For example, within Femdom, where female dominance is central. Yet BDSM doesn’t automatically mean someone subscribes to patriarchal ideas. For many people, BDSM is actually about consciously choosing roles, independent of societal expectations.
What is interesting about the concept of patriarchy is that it often unconsciously influences how people view themselves and one another. Not only in major societal discussions, but also in small, everyday patterns. Precisely for this reason, it remains a topic that regularly resurfaces when discussing power, relationships, and identity.

Discussions about patriarchal structures can be sensitive, as they touch on personal beliefs, experiences, and social changes. It helps to leave room for nuance and conversation, without immediately falling into oppositions.
Within BDSM, it is also important to distinguish between consensual power dynamics and social inequality. A voluntarily chosen D/s relationship is different from actual social or economic dependence.
