Bit

Definition
A bit is a mouthpiece that is placed between the sub’s teeth and is usually secured behind the head with straps or bands. It is inspired by horse bits used in equestrian sports and is mainly used in BDSM for pony play, pet play, and games that focus on control, submission, or animal transformation.

Explanation of a bit

A bit is a special piece of BDSM equipment. Whereas a ball gag closes the mouth, a bit keeps the mouth partially open, with a horizontal bar between the teeth. It is reminiscent of a horse’s mouthpiece, and that is no coincidence: the origin of the bit in BDSM comes directly from the world of pony play, in which a sub behaves like a horse or pony and is led, trained, or ridden by a Dominant.

Wearing a bit not only causes physical restriction—it impedes speech, affects the jaw muscles, and makes the sub dependent on nonverbal communication—but also has a strong psychological effect. It evokes feelings of submission, loss of autonomy, becoming “something” instead of “someone.” This makes the bit a powerful symbol in games in which the sub is transformed into a pet, work animal, or possession.

Symbol of obedience

Bits come in different shapes and materials. Some are made of hard rubber, others of metal or leather. They can be simple, such as a loose bar with straps, or part of a complete head harness with blinders, ears, or even a bridle. In pet play, bits are also used in dog play or puppy play as a symbol of obedience.

The use of a bit can be playful, as part of a fantasy, or ceremonial, for example when “training” a new submissive. The impact is not only in the physical discomfort, but especially in what it means: you can no longer talk, only listen, feel, and obey.

Safety & points of attention

A bit forces the jaw into an unnatural position. Do not wear it for too long, especially not with novice subs or people with jaw problems (such as TMD or temporomandibular joint disorders).

Make sure the sub can breathe properly through their nose. A bit impedes speech, but should never block breathing or the swallowing reflex.

Mouth mucous membranes are sensitive. Choose materials that are easy to clean and have no sharp edges.
