Torture of caress
Definition
Torture of the Caress refers within BDSM to a playful and greatly toned-down form of erotic overstimulation, in which tension is deliberately built up and prolonged beyond the point of release. The term is a nod to a historical method of torture, but in the contemporary context refers exclusively to a consensual and non-harmful form of tease- and denial-like overstimulation.

Explanation of torture or caress
The Torture of the Caress was a historical method of torture intended to kill a man in an erotic manner. The female executioner brought him to climax and then continued emphatically, often beyond his physical limits. In some descriptions, this was supplemented with extreme facesitting to cause suffocation. The ultimate result was death, as described in considerable detail by Octave Mirbeau in The Torture Garden, in which he depicts this so-called Chinese torture in literary form.
Within BDSM, the term does not refer to this deadly practice, of course. It is a playful, greatly toned-down interpretation that mainly refers to teasing, building up, and prolonging tension. The name is therefore mainly a nod to the historical context, without the original cruelty.
Pleasure and overstimulation
The dominant party plays with the boundary between pleasure and overstimulation by stimulating the recipient for a long time, rhythmically or variably, often at moments when relaxation or orgasm has already occurred. This is not about harm or exhaustion, but about consciously manipulating arousal and surrender. Many people experience this form of overstimulation as intense, because the body becomes more sensitive after a climax and touch can therefore penetrate more deeply.
Safety and points of attention
Although Torture of the Caress appeals to many people precisely because of its intensity, this form of play requires caution.
Overstimulation can be pleasant, but after an orgasm, the body becomes more easily overstimulated, which can lead to unexpected discomfort or even pain. It is therefore important that the Dominant continues to observe: breathing, muscle tension, and nonverbal signals often say more than words.
Communication remains essential, both before and during play, so that it is clear where the boundaries lie and how the sub indicates that enough is enough. Especially when playing with breath restriction, such as in facesitting, safety must always come first.
This means working in a controlled manner, never completely closing off the airway, and stopping immediately as soon as signs of panic or disorientation become apparent.
The Dominant must also allow for recovery moments, as the body sometimes needs a few minutes to process stimuli. Nothing about this form of play is purely mechanical; it requires sensitivity, attention, and a willingness to adjust immediately when necessary.
