Jaw clamp

Definition
A jaw clamp is a clamp or spreading device used to forcibly hold the mouth or jaw open or, conversely, to press it shut. It can be found as a medical instrument, but is also described in historical torture practices and sometimes mentioned in extreme forms of medical fetishism or control in BDSMscenarios.

Explanation of jaw clamps

Jaw clamps come in various designs. Medical versions are designed to keep the mouth open during dental procedures or surgery and usually have an adjustable screw or lifting mechanism and sometimes rubber padding on the contact surfaces. Historical or torture-like variants were often cruder and intended to cause pain and humiliation.

In a fetish context, a jaw clamp evokes strong visual and physical symbols of power: the clamp makes it impossible to close the mouth and leaves the sub very vulnerable and dependent. The instrument acts directly on the teeth, jaw joint, and soft tissues and is therefore one of the more invasive tools you can use.

Safety and points of attention

A jaw clamp carries significant risks and should only be used with explicit, informed, and ongoing consent.

The greatest dangers are damage to teeth and prostheses, stretching or dislocation of the jaw joint (TMJ), tearing or bruising of the lips and cheek mucosa, overproduction of saliva with choking or aspiration risk, and breathing problems when the position of the head is restricted.

When using it, you must: always check the mouth and dentition beforehand for vulnerabilities such as loose teeth, bridges, braces, or dental wounds; do not apply too much force and adjust the clamp gradually.

Strictly limit the total duration of use and visually observe the sub continuously.

Ensure that the sub can breathe comfortably and that instruments are immediately available to quickly remove the clamp.

Disinfect the jaw clamp before and after use.

Avoid jaw clamps in people with jaw problems, respiratory disorders, epilepsy, or severe fear of being restrained.

If in doubt, use a milder, less invasive option such as a ring gag or bit gag.
