Definition
A gag is an object placed in or over the mouth of a submissive to hinder or completely prevent speech. It is often used in bondage or domination play situations as a symbol of power, control, and submission.
Explanation of gag
Gags come in various forms, from simple ball gags to advanced metal or inflatable variants.
The most well-known is the ball gag: a rubber or silicone ball attached to a strap that fastens behind the head. Other types include the bit gag (like a horse bit), ring gag (keeps the mouth open), panel gag (with a leather plate over the mouth), and inflatable gag (can be pumped up to increase pressure).
Wearing a gag can evoke an intense feeling of powerlessness, as it restricts the sub’s verbal communication and thus reinforces the control exercised by the Dominant. Emotionally, this can lead to a deep experience of surrender, dependence, and trust. Some subs experience it as erotic, humiliating, or soothing, depending on the dynamic between the two.
In bondage sessions, the gag is often combined with other forms of restraint, such as handcuffs or ropes. The experience is then not only about physical silence, but also about symbolic “silencing” within a safe, consensual context.
Safety & points of attention
A gag is never without risks. It impedes breathing and communication, which can be dangerous, especially for beginners.
Do not use a gag if you have a cold, shortness of breath, asthma, or fear of suffocation.
Always agree on a non-verbal stop signal in advance, such as dropping a ball or squeezing the hand.
Constantly check that the sub can breathe freely through their nose.
Do not use the gag for too long; mucus build-up and fatigue of the jaw muscles can occur quickly.
Avoid hard materials that can damage teeth or tear the lips.
Clean the gag thoroughly after each use with antibacterial soap or a special toy cleaning agent. Also, make sure that an inflatable gag is never inflated too tightly and that the Dominant always has scissors or a quick-release buckle handy to remove the gag immediately if something goes wrong.
