Explanation of pinwheel

Pinwheels are often used in sensation play, medical play, or as a build-up to pain sessions. The instrument is rolled over the skin with light or firm pressure, creating a tingling, tickling, or stinging sensation. For many subs, it feels like a mixture of tension, alertness, and surrender: you know what’s coming, but every movement still surprises you.

There are different types of pinwheels. The best known is the Wartenberg pinwheel, originally designed by neurologists to test skin sensitivity. In BDSM, this medical instrument is used to create tension, activate nerve pathways, and make the body react.

Pinwheels are also popular because you can play in a very measured way: from feather-light caresses to sharp, almost cutting pricks. By varying the pace, changing the pressure, or using the wheel on different parts of the body, you can slowly guide the sub into subspace. In addition, pinwheels combine beautifully with blindfolds, bondage, temperature play, or teasing prior to impact play.

Safety & points of attention

Hygiene is essential. Use a clean and disinfected pinwheel. The points can cause superficial damage to the skin, even if it is not visible.

Avoid dangerous areas, such as the eyes, neck, nipples in men, the inside of the arms, joints, and areas with visible blood vessels.

Pay attention to pressure and control. A pinwheel can quickly feel intense. A little extra pressure can greatly increase the sensation.

Do not use a pinwheel on burnt, irritated, or fragile skin, or on areas with skin conditions.

Be careful with blood thinners. Even minor damage can cause more bleeding or slower healing.

Disinfect afterwards. Both the instrument and the skin if small punctures have occurred.

Cheap pinwheels can quickly become damaged or rusty, which poses a risk of infection.
