Cage
Definition
In BDSM, a cage is a physical device in which a sub is temporarily confined. This can range from a small metal or wooden cage to a specially designed body cage, bench or chastity cage. The cage symbolizes restriction, control, and surrender, and can be used both literally and symbolically in D/s dynamics.

Explanation of the cage
The cage is a powerful symbol in the world of BDSM: it represents imprisonment, but also security. When a sub is placed in a cage, a special tension arises between power and trust. The Dominant determines when the cage is opened, how long the confinement lasts, and what the sub is or is not allowed to do during that period. For some, this is a form of physical discipline or punishment; for others, it is a ritual of rest and surrender.
There are countless types of cages. Space cages are large enough to sit or lie in and are often used as part of pet play or long-term training. Body cages, on the other hand, completely enclose the body, like a steel frame or harness in which the sub can barely move.
And then there is the chastity cage, which is specifically designed to enclose a man’s genitals and prevent him from masturbating or ejaculating. This smaller variant is best known in chastity play and requires long-term trust between the keyholder and the wearer.
Emotionally, a cage can have multiple layers. Some subs experience confinement as humiliating or challenging, while others find it soothing and safe. The realization that control lies entirely with the Dominant can lead to deep relaxation and a feeling of security – as if thinking can cease for a moment and only being remains.
Safety & points of attention
Confinement in a cage carries both physical and mental risks.
Always ensure adequate ventilation, freedom of movement, and supervision.
Never leave a sub unattended in a closed cage, especially during longer sessions.
Pay attention to posture, breathing, and circulation – staying in one position for too long can lead to cramps, numbness, or muscle pain.
Mental safety is just as important. Not everyone can tolerate prolonged confinement or feelings of powerlessness. Some people may experience panic attacks or feel emotionally overwhelmed.
Discuss boundaries, safe words, and the duration of the game in advance.
