Hood
Definition
A hood (also known as a mask) is a covering for the head that is used in BDSM to restrict the senses, enhance anonymity, or intensify the power dynamic between Dominant and sub.

Explanation of hood
The hood is a commonly used attribute in deprivation play and can range from simple fabric masks to fully enclosed leather hoods with zippers, buckles, or built-in mouth and eye openings. By covering the head (the most expressive and recognizable part of the body), the sub loses part of their identity and visibility, which enhances feelings of surrender, dependence, and excitement.
Hoods are often used in bondage, discipline, roleplay, or fetish play. Some subs find wearing a hood liberating because they don’t have to show their face and can therefore surrender more deeply. For others, it increases the tension because they cannot see their surroundings or respond to nonverbal cues.
There are countless variations: leather hoods with a tight fit, latex or rubber hoods with a shiny appearance, neoprene versions that are easier to breathe in, or hoods with attached masks or muzzles. In more extreme forms, breath restriction elements can also be integrated, such as a built-in gag or a restricted air supply – but this is exclusively the domain of highly experienced players with extensive safety knowledge.
The hood is also regularly used in fetish photography and puppy or doggy play, where it plays a role in the imagery of submission, obedience, and role blurring.
Safety & points of attention
When using a hood, breathing is always central. It must be possible to inhale sufficient air at all times. A cap that covers the nose or mouth can quickly become dangerous, especially in combination with physical exertion, latex, or a tightly fitting material.
Watch for signs of panic, shortness of breath, or overheating. Preferably use a safe signal instead of a safe word, as the sub is often unable to speak. This could be a knocking motion or an agreed-upon tap, for example.
Always choose a size that fits well but does not pinch, and regularly check temperature, breathing, and comfort during play.
Clean the hood thoroughly after use, especially with materials such as latex and leather, which are sensitive to moisture and bacteria.
Finally, never use a fully enclosed hood without someone directly supervising.
