Definition
A branding is a permanent or temporary scar made on the skin by heating metal or other materials. Within BDSM, this is used as an extreme form of ownership marking or body decoration.
Explanation of branding
Branding a body is an ancient practice that we know from livestock farming, but also from human history, where it often symbolized punishment or ownership. Within BDSM and fetish culture, branding is sometimes used as a very intense form of declaration of ownership or as body modification that remains permanently visible.
Branding is usually done with a heated piece of metal that is pressed briefly against the skin. This causes a controlled burn that leaves scar tissue in the form of a pattern, letter, or symbol. Some couples choose initials, a heart, a circle, or a specific sign that symbolizes the dynamic between Dominant and sub.
Cautery branding
In addition to classic branding with metal, there is also cautery branding, which uses an electrically heated needle or tip to draw on the skin. This allows for more detailed shapes. You can also opt for temporary branding with, for example, dry ice (cold branding), which causes less deep damage to the skin but can still result in scarring.
The experience of branding is intense. For the sub, it can be the ultimate form of surrender and ownership: the body literally bears the mark of the Dominant. For the Dominant, it can provide a strong sense of connection and symbolism. The psychological impact is at least as great as the physical pain, and there is often a deep emotional significance within the relationship.
Safety & points of attention
Branding is a form of body modification and always carries a risk of infection, severe scarring, and complications.
Work exclusively in sterile conditions, just as with tattooing or piercing. The use of unprofessional equipment can be dangerous.
Intensive wound care is necessary, similar to a large burn. This can take weeks to months.
A brand mark is (virtually) irreversible. It must always be a well-considered and voluntary choice.
Only allow this to be performed by someone with experience in medical or body modification techniques. Never do this at home without training.
