Explanation of flared base

In BDSM and sexual safety, a flared base is an essential safety feature. With anal use, there is no natural “stop” as there is with vaginal penetration. The sphincter muscle can contract and pull an object in. Without a widened base, a toy can disappear completely into the rectum, possibly requiring medical intervention.

A good flared base is clearly wider than the narrowest point of the toy and forms a stable, external boundary. You see this in butt plugs, anal beads, and tail plugs. In a BDSM context, this is especially relevant during prolonged wear, bondage, or movement restriction, where the wearer has less control over their own body.

Safety & points of attention

A toy that is used anally must always have a clear flared base. Improvising with objects without a widened base carries a real risk.

Also note: When in doubt, do not use.

  • Sufficient lubricant, preferably silicone- or water-based depending on the material.
  • High-quality, non-porous material such as silicone, stainless steel, or glass.
  • No damage or sharp edges.
