Cuffs

Definition
Cuffs are objects that can be used to secure someone’s hands, ankles, or other body parts, with the aim of restricting their freedom of movement. In BDSM, restraints are used for bondage, surrender, and power exchange, often in combination with other forms of play.

Explanation of cuffs

Cuffs are among the best-known and most commonly used accessories in BDSM. Restraining a sub with cuffs can evoke a strong sense of power and surrender. For the Dominant, it provides control and the ability to shape the game, while the sub often experiences a sense of surrender, vulnerability, and excitement.

There are many types of cuffs, from classic metal handcuffs (as used by the police) to leather, neoprene, or plush variants developed specifically for BDSM. The softer materials are generally more comfortable and safer for prolonged use. Extra care must be taken with metal cuffs, as the hard edges can pinch nerves or blood vessels and cause cuts or bruises if unexpected movements occur.

Wrists and ankles

Cuffs can be used to secure wrists or ankles together, or in combination with chains, carabiners, or a bondage frame. There are also sets in which cuffs can be attached to a bed or cross using straps or D-rings. In more advanced settings, cuffs are used in combination with bondage positions, spreader bars, or even suspension play, although the latter requires a great deal of knowledge and experience.

Safety is always paramount when using shackles. It is important to check regularly that blood circulation remains intact (cold hands or feet are a warning sign) and to use panic hooks or quick-release fasteners when securing a sub, so that they can be freed immediately if necessary. You should also keep in mind that a sub in restraints often has less control over their balance, which can pose risks if they fall or trip.

Psychological impact

What makes handcuffs special is that they not only provide physical restraint, but also have a psychological impact. Hearing a lock click or feeling leather around the wrists can immediately put a sub in the right mindset. For many people, it is a symbol of power and surrender, evoking tension, excitement, or security.

Safety & points of attention

Always use handcuffs that are suitable for BDSM and have no sharp edges. Police handcuffs can be dangerous in case of unexpected movements.

Check blood circulation regularly: cold or tingling hands/feet are a sign to release immediately.

Provide an escape: Always provide a way to quickly open restraints, for example with panic hooks or a key within reach.
