Norman John
Definition
John Norman is the pseudonym of American author John Frederick Lange Jr. (born 1931), known for the Gor book series. His work combines science fiction with themes of domination and submission, and has influenced the way some people view BDSM, especially slavery dynamics, worldwide.

Explanation Norman John
Norman’s first novel, Tarnsman of Gor (1966), is set on the fictional planet Gor – a “twin planet” of Earth, where society is based on strength, hierarchy, and traditional gender roles. In this world, women are often seen as property or slaves, while men live out their natural dominance. The series grew to more than thirty books, which have been both acclaimed and criticized.
Although Norman does not call himself a BDSM writer, many readers were inspired by the way he described power, submission, and ritual slavery. Especially in the 1980s and 1990s, groups calling themselves Goreans emerged in online communities: people who lived according to the philosophy of Gor, often with an emphasis on discipline, honor, loyalty, and service.
Influential figure
The Gor world differs from classic BDSM in its almost philosophical emphasis on “natural roles”: the belief that some people are naturally more dominant or submissive. This view partly corresponds with how some BDSM practitioners experience their identity, but it can also clash with modern ideas about equality and gender.
Despite (or perhaps because of) the controversy, Norman remains an influential figure in BDSM literature. His work has contributed to the aesthetics of the master-slave fantasy, but also raises important questions about power, ethics, and freedom of choice.
Safety & points of attention
Although the Gor books are a source of inspiration for many, it is important to distinguish between fiction and reality.
In Norman’s world, slavery is often not voluntary; in BDSM, consent is the foundation.
As a novice sub or Dom, don’t be led by the idea that submission or domination is something natural or obligatory—in reality, it’s about mutual choice, trust, and equality outside of play.
Some people who call themselves “Gorean” follow strict hierarchical rules. This can be fine within role-play, but in real life it requires clear agreements to prevent abuse.
