Intersex

Definition
Intersex refers to a person born with physical or genetic characteristics that do not fully fit within the traditional medical definitions of male or female. This may relate to chromosomes, gonads, hormone levels, or genitalia. Intersexuality is a natural, biological variation within the human spectrum.

Explanation of intersex

Intersexuality is not a choice or identity, but an innate physical characteristic. There are more than forty medical variants of intersexuality, including differences in hormone production, chromosomal composition (such as XXY instead of XX or XY), or developmental differences in the sex organs. Some people only discover that they are intersex later in life, for example during fertility testing.

In the context of BDSM, intersexuality can be relevant because this community often offers space for diversity and self-expression. People who identify as intersex sometimes experience a liberating feeling within BDSM, where roles (Dominant, sub, switch) are more important than biological sex characteristics. At the same time, it can also be confrontational, especially if there is little understanding of their physical variation or if partners unconsciously remain stuck in binary thinking patterns.

Autonomy

It is important that intersex people, like everyone else, have the right to complete autonomy over their bodies and identities. In the past, intersex babies were sometimes operated on without their consent in order to assign them a “clear gender.” Today, there is a growing awareness that such interventions are ethically problematic.

Safety & points of attention

Respect privacy: not everyone wants or needs to share that they are intersex.

Avoid making assumptions about gender or anatomy. It is better to ask what is comfortable than to guess.

Be careful with physical actions: some intersex bodies react differently to pressure, pain, or stimulation. Check with the person themselves.

Consent is always paramount: the fact that someone is intersex does not mean that their body can be approached in a “different” way.

Be aware of medical trauma: some intersex people have had negative experiences with doctors or operations. Do not unintentionally trigger this by using medical terminology or adopting a dominant attitude without checking first.
