Erotic asphyxiation
Definition
Erotic asphyxiation is the induction or simulation of oxygen deprivation during sexual or BDSM experiences to increase the intensity of arousal or orgasm.

Explanation of erotic asphyxiation
Erotic asphyxiation, also known as breath control, is one of the most risky forms of BDSM. The principle is based on temporarily restricting breathing or blood flow to the brain, which can cause a feeling of dizziness, euphoria, or intense pleasure. For some people, this enhances the feeling of surrender or power, while for others it creates a deep mental trance.
Within BDSM, this experience sometimes becomes part of domination, humiliation, or control: the Dominant literally regulates the submissive’s breathing. The tension between power and vulnerability can be very powerful mentally, but the risk is extremely high. Just a few seconds of too little oxygen or incorrect pressure on the neck can lead to unconsciousness, permanent brain damage, or even death.
That is why experienced players and professionals emphasize: erotic asphyxiation can never be performed completely safely. Even with experience, control, and knowledge of the human body, it remains an act with potentially fatal consequences.
Safety & points of attention
The following applies to any form of breath play: no technique that actually restricts oxygen is safe. What is sometimes considered “safe” are light or controlled variants that mimic breathing or only play psychologically with tension. Think of temporarily covering the mouth without pressure, working with suggestion, language, or a blindfold to evoke the feeling of loss of control.
Important points to note:
Never apply pressure to the throat or carotid arteries. Even a light grip can cause unconsciousness within seconds.
Never use straps, cords, pillows, or plastic bags.
Never leave a sub alone after any form of breath play – not even for a short time.
Avoid any form of oxygen restriction in cases of heart problems, high blood pressure, or panic attacks.
The safest approach is to play with breathing mentally or symbolically. Let the Dominant regulate breathing through commands (“breathe in…”, “don’t move…”, “stay still…”), or use rhythm and tension to deepen the experience without physical suffocation. This way, you maintain the psychological effect, but without risking life and limb.
Aftercare is important in every session. After shortness of breath, dizziness, or panic, the session must be stopped immediately, followed by rest, water, and reassurance. Always have a sub who has been briefly unconscious checked by a doctor, even if he or she “feels fine again.”
Erotic asphyxiation is therefore not just an intense form of play: it is a genuinely life-threatening activity that should only be approached with knowledge, complete openness, and a deep respect for the limits of the body.
