Explanation of enema

The administration of an enema originally had a medical application: cleansing the intestines in cases of constipation or prior to an examination. Within BDSM, however, it can also have an erotic, symbolic, or psychological element. For many subs, the feeling of filling the body evokes shame, surrender, or dependence – themes that play an important role in medical or caregiving play.

The Dominant controls not only the pace, but also the volume, temperature, and posture of the submissive. The physical sensation of an enema can range from mild pressure to an intense feeling of expansion. It is not only the physical stimulus that has an effect, but also the mental experience of being ‘full’, the waiting and ultimately the release. This combination of control and relaxation means that an enema in a BDSM context is often experienced as a ritual: a moment of cleansing, humility or preparation for what follows.

Safety & points of attention

An enema may seem harmless, but it requires care and hygiene. Only use clean materials intended for anal use, such as an enema syringe, bulb, or irrigation set. Make sure the liquid is at body temperature (approximately 98.6°F) to prevent cramps or burns. Liquid that is too cold causes abdominal cramps; liquid that is too hot can damage the intestinal mucosa.

Preferably use lukewarm water, possibly with a very small amount of salt or mild soap, but never aggressive agents or chemicals. Allow the liquid to flow in slowly and stop immediately if pain, dizziness, or nausea occurs. Never force the flow of liquid. The sub must always be able to indicate when it becomes uncomfortable.

Do not force retention

After insertion, allow sufficient time to retain the liquid, but do not force it. When the urge becomes too strong, the sub must be able to go to the toilet. Forcing retention or blocking defecation is risky and can lead to intestinal damage or fainting.

Ensure privacy, rest, and clean equipment. Afterwards, it is important to allow the body to recover and drink plenty of fluids. An enema is often combined with other medically-themed experiences, but should never be used as punishment or humiliation without prior consent.
