Explanation of animal play

Animal play revolves around temporarily assuming an animal identity. This can be playful and lighthearted, such as a puppy enthusiastically playing with a ball, but it can also be serious and ritualistic, with the participant fully stepping into the role of, for example, a horse or pig. The appeal of animal play often lies in the freedom to let go of human rules and expectations for a moment and experience instinctive behavior.

Within BDSM, animal play can take various forms. Puppy play is the best-known variant, in which the submissive behaves like a dog and the Dominant takes on the role of trainer or owner. Horse play (pony play) often places more emphasis on show, discipline, and training, with harnesses, bits, or sulky carts. Cat or fox roles are usually more playful or seductive, focusing on agility, curiosity, or cunning. Piggy play can be playful and lighthearted – think of scratching around, grunting, or muddy play – but it can also be a serious fetishistic experience, focusing on themes such as filth and humiliation.

Physical and psychological

The experience can be purely physical – crawling, fetching, learning to follow commands – but also deeply psychological. For the submissive, it can be liberating to temporarily relinquish the responsibility of “being human” and allow themselves to be completely guided. For the Dominant, providing structure, training, and care can be a powerful form of control and nurturing.

Some couples experience animal play as playful and light-hearted, others see it as an intense part of their D/s dynamic. It is not always sexual in nature; sometimes the focus is on the connection, the play, or the surrender.

Safety & points of attention

Ensure physical safety: walking on hands and knees can be stressful, protect knees and wrists if necessary.

Use safe materials (e.g., soft bits, well-fitting harnesses) to prevent injuries.
