Rigger
Definition
A rigger is the person who ties ropes during bondage or Shibari. The rigger is responsible for the technique, safety, communication, and experience of the person being tied.

Explanation of rigger
In bondage – and certainly in shibari – the rigger plays an important, often almost ceremonial role. It is the rigger who determines how the rope moves across the body, where pressure is built up, how tension is distributed, and what posture or experience is created.
A good rigger works attentively and with knowledge of anatomy. Rope is not a means of “restraining” someone, but an instrument for connection, art, surrender, or play. The style varies greatly from rigger to rigger: some work technically and tightly, others intuitively and playfully, and still others ritually and slowly.
Trust
The rigger is responsible for the comfort and safety of the “bunny” or “rope bottom.” The process revolves around trust: the bunny gives up control of their body, and the rigger gives them peace of mind, skill, and care in return. An experienced rigger can sense when the tension is right, when a line is too tight, or when a bunny is starting to sink mentally into subspace.
For many players, the rigger is not only the executor, but also the leader, guide, and emotional anchor. Bondage can be aesthetic, sensual, painful, comforting, or confrontational, and the rigger guides that experience with technique, energy, and attention.
Safety & points of attention
Knowledge of anatomy is essential. Nerve pathways, shoulders, and arms are particularly vulnerable.
Regular check-ins with the bunny. Tingling, numbness, or sudden warmth are important signals.
Never tie rope around the neck without highly advanced knowledge.
Keep a pair of safety scissors (bandage scissors) within reach. Rope must be able to be cut immediately if something goes wrong.
Work with clean, intact rope. No burrs or torn fibers.
Build up slowly. Both in tension and in complexity.
Mental safety is just as important as physical safety. Bondage touches deep layers of trust and surrender.
Be aware of the risk of falling during suspension. Suspensions require separate expertise and experience.
