A newbie is a term used within the BDSM world to refer to someone who is new to the BDSM experience. The word comes from the English word “new” and literally means “newcomer.” A newbie can be dominant, submissive, or switch and is in the phase of discovery, learning, and orientation.

The term newbie is often used affectionately and sometimes teasingly for people who are taking their first steps into BDSM. It is a period in which curiosity and uncertainty alternate. A newbie usually has little experience with physical or mental intensity, is not yet fully familiar with the etiquette within the scene, and is looking for trust, knowledge, and self-insight. It is important that newcomers not only learn about techniques, but above all about safety, communication, and consent.
For an experienced Dominant, guiding a newbie can be enriching, because it gives them the opportunity to teach, guide, and help someone grow in awareness and experience. The “newbie” phase is temporary, but valuable.
