Mummification

Definition
In BDSM, mummification is a form of complete immobilization, in which the sub’s body is carefully wrapped in plastic wrap, tape, bandages, or other tight material. The goal is to completely immobilize the sub, creating a feeling of powerlessness, surrender, and intense awareness of one’s own body.

Explanation of mummification

The name mummification refers to the wrapping of Egyptian mummies, but within BDSM it has nothing to do with death or religion. It is a sensual and psychological game involving restriction, breathing, and control. The sub is wrapped layer by layer – sometimes only parts of the body (such as arms or legs), sometimes completely from neck to feet.

The experience of mummification is intense. The sub loses freedom of movement, sight, sometimes even hearing or speech, and can only surrender to touch, silence, or the presence of the Dominant. This can lead to deep relaxation, trance, or even a meditative state. At the same time, it can also evoke feelings of tension, fear, or excitement, depending on the trust between both partners.

The Dominant determines how tightly the wrapping is done, how long the fixation lasts, and whether sensory stimuli are added, such as cold, heat, touch, or sound. Some players use mummification purely as a form of bondage, others as a ritual of surrender or purification. Due to its visual impact – the completely wrapped body—it is also often used in photography or performance within the fetish scene.

Safety & points of attention

Mummification is a high-risk form of bondage and requires knowledge, experience, and constant vigilance. The greatest dangers are suffocation, overheating, and panic reactions. Therefore, never work alone and always supervise. Leave the nose, mouth, and chest free so that the sub can breathe properly.

Use material that is not airtight, such as foil with openings or stretchy bandages.

Avoid plastic wraps directly over the face or neck.

Constantly check breathing, skin color, and temperature. The sub can quickly overheat because the body cannot release heat.

Keep the session short – especially for first-time experiences, no longer than 10–15 minutes – and have scissors or a safety knife on hand to immediately remove the material in case of an emergency.

In addition to physical safety, mental safety is also important. Mummification can evoke feelings of claustrophobia.

Agree on clear boundaries in advance and use a safe sound or object signal that the sub can drop as an emergency signal.

Afterwards, aftercare is essential: the body may feel tingly or numb, and the sub often needs warmth, water, touch, and reassurance. The transition from total fixation to freedom can be emotionally intense.
