Homosexual (also referred to as gay) refers to someone who is emotionally and/or sexually attracted to people of the same gender.

Within the BDSM world, homosexuality occurs in all kinds of forms, just as it does within society itself. The term refers to sexual preference, but not automatically to the division of roles within a BDSM relationship. For example, a homosexual man can be either Dominant or sub, or both, depending on his personal preference and dynamics with his partner.
Homosexuality within BDSM has a rich history, especially in the male gay scene, where much of modern BDSM culture originated. In the 1950s and 1960s, the first leather clubs and gay bars emerged in cities such as San Francisco and Berlin, where dominance, discipline, and fetishism played a central role. Think of leather harnesses, caps, boots, and an emphasis on ceremony and hierarchy. This culture has contributed deeply to the visual and symbolic language of contemporary BDSM.
Today, there are both gay and mixed BDSM communities. Although some rituals and codes originate from the male gay scene, homosexuality within BDSM is broader than that: female Dominants and female subs can also have a homosexual preference, with their own dynamics and experiences that often revolve around gentleness, depth, and emotional connection.
Safety & points of attention
A person’s sexual orientation should never be treated as a fetish or experiment. BDSM is all about respect and equality, regardless of preference or identity. Especially in mixed settings, it is important to set clear boundaries: a homosexual sub does not have to be open to contact with someone of the opposite sex, and vice versa.
In addition, communication remains essential, especially when sexual acts are part of the game. Safe sex, the use of protection, and regular health checks are also important within BDSM practices.
For many gay people, BDSM can also provide a safe space to express their identity without judgment – provided that space is truly open and respectful.
