Plasticizers
Definition
Plasticizers are substances added to plastics to make them softer, more pliable, and more flexible. They are used in PVC products, rubber-like materials, and some sex toys, among other things.
Explanation of plasticizers
Plasticizers play an important role in the production of many everyday products. Without these additives, certain plastics would be hard, stiff, or brittle. Adding plasticizers creates a softer material that feels more comfortable and is easier to mold.
Within the BDSM and sex toy world, knowledge about plasticizers has become important because some older or cheaper toys were made from PVC materials that contain relatively high levels of plasticizers. Over time, these substances can leach out of the material, causing the surface to become sticky, discolor, or develop a strong chemical odor.
For this reason, many manufacturers now opt for materials such as medical-grade silicone, stainless steel, glass, or aluminum, which do not require plasticizers and are easier to keep clean.
Safety & Considerations
When purchasing sex toys, it’s wise to pay attention to the materials used. Toys made of high-quality silicone, glass, or metal are often considered more durable and easier to clean than products made from unknown plastic blends.
If a toy becomes sticky, has a strong chemical odor, discolors, or shows signs of wear, replacement may be advisable. Damaged materials can be harder to clean and therefore become less hygienic.
For products that come into prolonged contact with skin or mucous membranes, material safety is an important consideration.
