Fall
Definition
The fall is the single, non-braided piece of leather or synthetic material located between the thong (the braided body of the whip) and the cracker (the thin end that causes the crack).
Explanation of the fall
First of all, the fall acts as a wear buffer. When used correctly, this segment is subjected to the greatest mechanical stress: air resistance, bending force, and impact energy are concentrated here before being directed to the cracker. Because the fall is replaceable, this prevents damage to the braided thong. This makes a significant difference in maintenance, especially for handmade whips.
In addition, the fall provides structural protection. Without this intermediate layer, the braided strands at the end would quickly fray or break due to the acceleration required to generate a sonic bang.
A third role is the gradual transfer of force. The whip acts as a tapered energy system. The fall ensures a smooth transition of mass and flexibility, efficiently accelerating the kinetic energy to the cracker. This is essential for control, timing, and a clean “crack.”
Technical details
The length of a fall is typically between 25 and 75 cm, depending on the type of whip (bullwhip, stockwhip, snakewhip) and its intended use. When the fall is shortened to approximately 30 to 45 cm due to wear and tear, replacement is usually necessary to maintain performance and safety.
Traditionally, sturdy but supple leather is used (e.g., kangaroo or cowhide). Modern variants can also be made of nylon or other synthetic fibers, especially in training whips.
Safety & points of attention
Because the fall is a consumable component, periodic inspection is part of responsible use. Cracks, extreme drying out, uneven stretching, or loss of flexibility affect both the crack and control. Replacement is done via a loop or knot connection so that the new fall can function again as an energy transfer without affecting the braided structure.
