Covern

Definition
Covern is a safety agreement within BDSM whereby a third person is called in beforehand to provide protection during a BDSM experience. This person acts as an external safety net and takes action when agreed contact moments fail to occur or when a pre-agreed alarm signal is given.

Explanation of cover persons

Cover persons are mainly used in situations involving increased risks. Examples include a first or anonymous meeting, an appointment with someone you have not met in person before, or solo activities such as self-bondage. Clear agreements are made with the cover person in advance. The participant calls or sends a text message at a fixed time. If there is no contact, the cover person knows that something may be wrong and takes the agreed measures.

These measures can vary from calling and sending messages again to visiting or calling emergency services, depending on what has been agreed in advance. The purpose of covering is not control or distrust, but taking responsibility for one’s own safety. Within serious and conscious BDSM experiences, covering is seen as a sign of maturity and care.

Covering is separate from the sexual or emotional dynamics between Dominant and sub. It is a practical safety structure that actually creates space for relaxation and surrender, because there is an external safety net. Even experienced Dominants and subs may choose to cover, simply because no situation is completely predictable.
