Definition
Strike branding is a form of permanent body marking in which a heated metal object is placed against the skin in one quick, direct motion to create a permanent scar. Also known as “branding.”
Explanation of strike branding
Strike branding is one of the most intense and permanent forms of body modification within BDSM. Unlike cautery branding – where an electrically heated pen is used to “draw” – strike branding is done in one stroke. The metal is heated until red-hot and then pressed onto the skin in a short, controlled touch.
The result is a firm, even burn that scars into a permanent mark. For some couples, this has symbolic value: ownership, commitment, fidelity, or a shared experience that is literally engraved in the flesh. Precisely because of its irreversible nature, it is an act that is not taken lightly and usually takes place within established dynamics or long-term D/s relationships.
Raw
The aesthetics of strike branding are raw and direct. Because it is done in one movement, the scar is often sharply defined and recognizable. People sometimes choose initials, simple symbols, or abstract shapes – always something that carries meaning in that dynamic. For the sub, it can feel like ultimate surrender; for the Dominant, like a ritual with strong emotional and physical intensity. The process itself is short, but the impact is significant.

Strike branding is a medical procedure with lasting consequences and should only be performed by experienced professionals with knowledge of sterile working practices, wound treatment, and scar formation.
The risk of infection, deep burns, wild flesh (keloid formation), nerve damage, and permanent pain is significant when done incorrectly.
Absolute sterility of equipment, skin preparation, and aftercare is essential. In addition, the appropriate location must be clearly discussed in advance: areas with thin skin, visible scarring, or a lot of movement are risky.
Psychological consent is just as important: the sub must fully understand that the scar is permanent and that emotions surrounding scars can be complex, even years later.
Follow-up, proper wound care, and the use of special ointments or wound gel are essential. If in doubt or if unexpected pain or redness worsens, medical attention should always be sought.
