Scourge

Definition
A scourge is a striking weapon or whip-like instrument consisting of a short handle with one or more straps, often fitted with knots, metal pieces, or other weights at the end. In BDSM, the scourge is sometimes used as an instrument for spanking or pain play, but it was originally a historical instrument of punishment and torture.

Explanation of scourge

Scourge have a long history and were originally used by the military, police, or executioners as a means of corporal punishment. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, they were notorious instruments: the straps of leather, braided rope, or sometimes metal were used to punish or humiliate someone. In many cases, the ends were fitted with lead knots, buckles, or metal rings that caused extra pain and injury.

In BDSM, the term scourge does not refer to this cruel use, but rather to a variant of a flogger. The scourge is usually used by more experienced players who consciously play with pain, discipline, and power. Due to the weight and structure of the straps, a blow with the scourge feels deeper than that of a regular whip: it combines impact with a sharp, burning sensation.

In modern BDSM contexts, the scourge can also have symbolic meaning – as a symbol of authority, punishment, or purification. In art, literature, and religion, the image of the karwats regularly recurs as a sign of discipline and penance.

Safety & points of attention

Due to its weight and power, the scourge can cause deep welts, bruises, or even open wounds. Therefore, it should only be used by someone with experience and control over striking technique and distance.

Avoid vulnerable areas such as the spine, kidneys, face, neck, and genitals.

Preferably target well-supplied areas such as the buttocks or upper thighs. Regularly check the condition of the leather or rope to ensure that no metal parts come loose and cause cuts.

Disinfect the surface if skin damage occurs, and treat the skin afterwards with a mild oil or lotion.

As with any pain play, work with clear agreements, signals, and consent.
