Mutilation
Definition
Mutilation literally means causing permanent physical injury or disfigurement. Within BDSM, the term refers to extreme forms of bodily harm in which skin, tissue, or body parts are permanently altered or removed. Because this causes permanent damage, mutilation falls outside the bounds of safe and consensual BDSM play.

Explanation of mutilation
In the medical and legal sense, mutilation is any act that irreparably damages or removes a part of the body, such as amputation, branding, or genital mutilation. Within the BDSM world, the term is sometimes mentioned in discussions about extreme body modification (such as scar art, piercings, branding, or implants), but that is where the comparison ends.
In body modification, every procedure is performed on a voluntary basis, under hygienic conditions, and usually by a professional. With mutilation, this is different: it involves permanent damage that often falls outside medically and ethically acceptable limits. In a BDSM context, it is considered a transgression because the principle of Safe, Sane & Consensual is violated as soon as permanent mutilation or serious injury occurs.
Although some more extreme players use the word “mutilation” as a provocative term, the broader BDSM community emphatically distances itself from anything that causes permanent or medically irresponsible damage. BDSM is about experience, trust, and reversible stimuli – not destruction.
Safety & points of attention
Any form of permanent physical change must take place outside of a BDSM session and only under the supervision of medical or qualified body art professionals.
Inflicting serious injury or mutilation without medical necessity or consent is a criminal offense. Dominants are responsible for the physical and mental well-being of their sub. Once the boundaries of health, integrity, or safety are crossed, it is no longer BDSM but abuse.
When in doubt about what is safe, always leave medical procedures to professionals. Play ends where irreparable damage begins.
