Kajira

Definition
A Kajira (plural: Kajirae) is a term originating from the Gor novels by author John Norman, in which it refers to a female slave who is the complete property of her master. Within certain BDSM circles, the term is used to refer to a sub who voluntarily and completely submits within a romantic or spiritually inspired D/s dynamic.

Explanation of Kajira

The term Kajira comes from the fantasy world of Gor, a fictional planet described by John Norman in his series of books (starting in 1966). This world is ruled by a strict hierarchical society in which women can live in the service of men as slaves- not as a form of punishment, but as a form of “natural order.” Within the context of these novels, the Kajira is sensual, obedient, and proud of her devotion.

In the BDSM world, there are people who partially adopt this Gorean philosophy, often within role-playing or lifestyle (the so-called Gorean community). In this context, the Kajira fulfills a serving, obedient role towards her Dominant (often called Jarl or Master). The emphasis is on discipline, beauty, devotion, and respect. So it is more than just sexual role-playing; it can also be an attitude to life, based on structure, service, and emotional bonding.

Many modern Kajirae do not experience this role as humiliating, but rather as a conscious choice to experience their feminine power and surrender in an intense way. In some communities, there are even ceremonies, training, and rituals reminiscent of spiritual devotion.

Safety & points of attention

Although the Gorean lifestyle can be deeply fulfilling for some, there is a danger that fantasy and reality will become intertwined. In the original books, the hierarchy is absolute and slavery is not experienced voluntarily – in the real world, voluntariness is always a hard limit.

Any form of Kajira roleplay must be based on clear consent, mutual respect, and the ability to set boundaries or stop the game.

A sub who identifies as a Kajira gives themselves emotionally, which can evoke deep attachment; Dominants therefore bear extra responsibility for this.

Outside the BDSM context, the term sometimes evokes resistance due to its association with inequality, so conscious and respectful use is important.
