Figging

Definition
Figging is a BDSM practice in which a piece of fresh ginger root (usually peeled and cut into the shape of a butt plug) is inserted into the anus or vagina to create an intense, burning, and tingling sensation. The sensation is temporary, natural, and often used as a form of punishment, humiliation, or sensual pain play.

Explanation of Figging

The term figging dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when ginger was already being used as a punishment. At that time, it was even used on horses to improve their posture for inspections: a piece of ginger in the anus made them appear livelier and more alert. Later, this technique was adopted in human spanking and discipline traditions – first as punishment, later also as an erotic stimulus.

Within BDSM, figging is seen as a natural, intense form of sensation play. As soon as the ginger comes into contact with the mucous membranes, it creates a warm, tingling, and burning sensation that gradually increases in intensity and then slowly subsides. The effect can vary from mildly stimulating to quite sharp, depending on the freshness of the ginger, the amount, and how long it remains in place.

Pain play

Figging is usually used as part of pain play, nature play, or humiliation play. For example, the Mistress can use it as a mild punishment: the sub must stand still or remain kneeling while the sensation is felt. The burning sensation reinforces the feeling of powerlessness and surrender. For some, it also evokes an almost meditative state: the pain is sharp but not damaging, causing the body to produce endorphins and the mind to enter a state of deep focus.

Although figging originated as a punishment, it can also be used sensually. In combination with bondage or tease & denial play, a subtle tension arises between pleasure and discomfort. The Dominant determines when the sensation ends – by removing the ginger or leaving it in for a little longer.

Safety & points of attention

Although figging is a natural method, caution is essential. Ginger contains oils (gingerol and shogaol) that strongly irritate the mucous membranes.

Always use fresh ginger, not powder or paste.

Remove the skin and cut the piece smooth without sharp edges.

If necessary, apply a thin layer of lubricant to facilitate insertion.

Never leave the ginger in for longer than 20–30 minutes and remove it immediately if there is severe pain or burning.

Rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards.

Never use figging on wounds, infections, or during menstruation, and be careful with people who have sensitive skin or allergies.

The sensation is usually more intense in the vagina than in the anus; beginners are advised to be careful with this.
