A drag queen is a performer who presents an exaggerated, theatrical form of feminine expression, often through striking clothing, make-up, wigs, and a distinctive stage presence. Drag revolves around expression, play with gender, performance, and identity, and is separate from a person’s biological sex or sexual orientation.

Drag queens use exaggeration, humor, aesthetics, and theatrical flair to portray a form of femininity that is intentionally larger than life. It is an art form in which gender roles are magnified, questioned, or celebrated. Make-up is often boldly applied, outfits are extravagant, and movements and facial expressions are clearly stylized. Everything is focused on visibility and expression.
At its core, drag is a performance, not a sexual act and not a fetish in itself. Although drag is sometimes confused with sexual orientation or gender identity, these are separate concepts. A drag queen may identify as a man, woman, or otherwise, may be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or something else, and does not need to express femininity outside the stage at all. Drag is something a person does, not necessarily something a person is.
Historically, drag has played an important role within the LGBTQ+ community. It offered space for people who fell outside social norms to make themselves visible, often in times when open expression was dangerous. Drag queens have been at the forefront of protest, self-determination, and the fight for recognition and rights, while also contributing to entertainment, satire, and social critique.
Safety & Points of Attention
Within the BDSM and kink scene, drag can play an additional role, for example as a form of role play, power play, or an expression of dominance or flamboyance. However, drag is not automatically connected to BDSM. The two may overlap, but drag also exists entirely independently as a form of stage art and identity expression.
What primarily characterizes being a drag queen is freedom. Freedom to play with appearance, expectations, gender, and the gaze of the audience. It is a form of expression that can confront, amuse, confuse, and inspire, precisely because it refuses to be confined to fixed categories.
