Dominant
Definition
A Dominant (often abbreviated as Dom) is the person who, in a BDSM dynamic or experience, fulfills the leading, guiding, or controlling role. The Dominant takes responsibility for guiding the submissive and derives satisfaction from power, care, and control within the game or relationship.
Explanation Dominant
Together with the submissive, the Dominant forms the core of many BDSM dynamics. Where the submissive surrenders, the Dominant takes the lead. This does not mean that a Dominant can simply do whatever he or she wants; on the contrary, the power of true dominance lies in responsibility, empathy, and carefully monitoring agreements.
Dominants come in many forms. Some experience their role primarily physically, through pain stimuli, bondage, or strict discipline. Others emphasize the psychological side: control, humiliation, challenging mental boundaries, or playing with power and dependence. For some, it is a game that is played temporarily, for others a lifestyle that is deeply intertwined with their identity.

A Dominant is not necessarily strict or harsh. Dominance can be gentle, loving, and caring, but also challenging, playful, or strict. The interpretation depends on the personality of the Dominant and the dynamic with the submissive. What always remains is that the Dominant bears the responsibility: to respect boundaries, ensure safety, and make the experience meaningful.
Within the BDSM community, there are various terms used to refer to Dominants: from Dom and Master(ess) to Daddy/Mommy or Rigger. Each title reflects a certain style and energy. There are also many misunderstandings: dominance is sometimes confused with arrogance or selfishness, while true dominance is based on balance, care, and respect.
