Dominance
Definition
Dominance within BDSM is the conscious and consensual exercise of power, leadership, and responsibility by one person over another. It involves an agreed-upon role in which guidance, decision-making, and setting boundaries are central, supported by trust and consent.

Explanation of dominance
Dominance is not a character trait in itself, but a role and dynamic that takes shape within a specific relationship or context. A dominant takes the lead, sets boundaries, and ensures the physical and mental safety of the submissive. This can be expressed in language, attitude, rituals, rules, rewards, and corrections.
Dominance can be gentle, caring, and guiding, but also strict, confrontational, or ritualistic in nature. The form differs per person and per relationship. For some, dominance is about structure and stability, for others it is about power, control, or directing pleasure and surrender.
It is essential that dominance is always relational: it only exists by virtue of voluntary surrender. Without consent, there is no dominance, only abuse of power.
Safety & points of attention
Dominance comes with responsibility. The Dominant monitors boundaries, reads signals, and ensures coordination and aftercare. Psychological safety is just as important as physical safety.
Clear communication, respecting safewords, and the ability to relinquish power when necessary are indispensable.
Dominance should never be used to exploit vulnerability or structurally undermine autonomy beyond what has been explicitly agreed upon.
