Crack
Definition
Within BDSM, crack usually refers to the sound and sensation of whips or floggers cracking through the air and making a loud bang (“crack”). The word can also be used to describe the sharp sensation of the strike itself.

Explanation of crack
The phenomenon of crack, or “cracking,” is mainly associated with whips such as the bullwhip or singletail. When the whip is swung through the air at speed, the tip (the cracker) reaches supersonic speed. This creates a loud bang, similar to a mini sonic boom. This sound alone can have a strong psychological impact on subs: the anticipation, tension, and threat often make as much of an impression as the actual strike.
Within BDSM, crack is experienced in two ways: as an auditory stimulus (hearing the bang can already transport someone to higher realms) and as a physical stimulus (feeling the sharp, cutting blow on the skin). It can vary from playful threats and show elements to very painful impact when actually used on the body.
Consciously producing the crack
For many Dominants, mastering a whip and consciously producing the crack is an art in itself. It requires technique, precision, and practice to make the whip crack safely without accidentally injuring the submissive. Within the community, “cracking” is often seen as a performance, for example during demonstrations or shows.
Safety & points to note
Properly cracking a whip requires a lot of training. Untrained use can lead to serious injury.
Always keep enough space when practicing; a whip can reach meters and be dangerous to bystanders.
Avoid the face, neck, spine, and joints. Aim for more robust body parts such as the buttocks or thighs.
If necessary, wear an eye mask or safety goggles during practice to prevent accidents.
