Colt branding
Definition
Colt branding is a form of branding within BDSM in which a hot metal object – often a steel rod, ring, or symbol – is briefly pressed against the skin to leave a permanent scar or pattern. The name comes from the traditional branding iron originally used on livestock.
Explanation of colt branding
Colt branding is one of the oldest and most recognizable forms of body marking in the BDSM world. Unlike cautery branding, which uses an electric instrument, colt branding uses a piece of metal that is heated in an open flame or with a gas burner until it is red-hot. It is then pressed against the skin for a very short time, creating a scar in the shape of the object.
The experience is intense: the hissing sound, the smell of skin briefly scorching, and the intense pain combine to form a ritual that has a deep emotional charge for many players. Often, it is not just about the physical scar, but what it symbolizes – devotion, ownership, victory, or a spiritual transition. For some, it even has the meaning of an initiation or confirmation of a D/s relationship.
Damage to the skin
Because colt branding causes irreversible damage to the skin, it is performed exclusively by experienced players or body modification specialists who know how to control heat and timing. The margin between a controlled scar and a severe burn is small, and the risk of infection or permanent tissue loss is real.
Although often seen as extreme by outsiders, within the BDSM community it can be experienced as sacred or bonding. The moment the mark is made is often brief but intense, followed by silence, care, and aftercare.
