Explanation of Castigation

The term castigation comes from Latin (castigare = to chastise, to correct) and has historically been used in religious and educational contexts. For centuries, corporal punishment was seen as a method of atoning for sins, enforcing discipline, or maintaining order. In modern times, the word is rarely used in everyday language, except in an academic or historical sense.

Within BDSM, the concept lives on as a conscious, often ritualistic form of punishment. Castigation can take various forms: administering blows with a whip, cane, or paddle, imposing humiliating tasks, or subjecting someone to physical discomfort such as kneeling or prolonged restraint.

Powerful dynamic

For Dominants and submissives, castigation can evoke a powerful dynamic. For the Dominant, it is a way to assert power and create order; for the sub, it can be an experience of penance, purification, or deeper surrender. The impact is often not only physical, but also emotional and symbolic.

In some relationships, castigation is used as part of a discipline dynamic: violations of agreements or rules are corrected by an agreed-upon punishment. For others, it is more about the experience of pain and humiliation, without there being any actual “mistakes.”

Safety & points of attention

Castigation should never be used as a “real punishment” outside of agreements. It is always a voluntary and agreed-upon game.

Tailor the intensity of the punishment to the sub’s capacity and limits.
