Explanation Bottom

The term bottom is used in the BDSM world to refer to the role of the person who submits, receives, or responds within a game. This does not necessarily mean that someone is also submissive in everyday life. A bottom plays the receiving party during a session, but may have a very different outlook on life outside of that context.

The distinction between bottom and sub is subtle but important. A sub consciously chooses a more structural and psychological role of submission, often outside of the session as well. A bottom, on the other hand, may choose purely for the experience of a session, without this saying anything about their personal identity or dynamics in relationships. For example, someone may be a sadist and still take on the role of bottom in certain situations, such as when receiving bondage or medical fetish play.

Temporary escape

The role of bottom often revolves around trust and surrender. The body and emotions are entrusted to the Dominant or Top, who takes the lead. This dynamic can evoke a lot of tension, adrenaline, and emotional charge. For some, it is a temporary escape from control, for others a way to explore deeper layers of their desires and emotions.

Within the BDSM community, there is also the term switch, for people who can take on both the role of Top and Bottom, depending on the situation, partner, or mood.
