Ball gag
Definition
A ball gag is a BDSM device in which a round ball is placed in the sub’s mouth and secured with a strap or band. The purpose is to restrict speech, increase surrender, and reinforce feelings of powerlessness or submission.

Explanation of ball gag
The ball gag is a round ball – made of rubber, silicone, plastic, or leather – that is placed between the teeth and secured behind the head with a strap or belt. The sub can no longer speak clearly, sometimes can barely swallow or make swallowing sounds, and is completely reliant on non-verbal communication. That is precisely what makes the experience so intense.
In practice, the ball gag is mainly used in bondage or domination experiences. Silence is not only enforced physically, but also felt mentally: the sub is no longer allowed to say anything, protest or beg. Only moan, breathe, sigh. This can be exciting, painful, oppressive or soothing – depending on the setting and the intensity of the dynamic.
Different types
There are different sizes and materials. Beginners often start with a smaller, softer gag. Advanced players sometimes use large or hard balls, or combine the gag with other forms of play such as bondage, spanking, face slapping, or humiliation. Some ball gags have openings, allowing saliva or voice to escape more easily. Others are completely closed, forcing the sub into total silence.
For the Dominant, the ball gag offers visual and psychological confirmation of control. The sub’s face is literally shaped by the Dominant’s will—mouth spread, jaws tense, sounds muffled. In some rituals, it is a symbolic crowning: the sub sacrificing his voice for total surrender.
Nevertheless, it is important to realize that a ball gag is not a “simple toy.” It affects breathing, can cause panic, or trigger a sub’s past. Therefore, good communication, trust, and experience are necessary.
Safety & points of attention
Only use ball gags made of safe materials
Make sure the gag is made of body-friendly material (silicone, rubber, leather without sharp edges). Cheap balls can be harmful to teeth or mucous membranes.
Choose the right size
A ball that is too large can force or even dislocate the jaw. Start small, especially with novice subs, and slowly build up to larger sizes as desired.
Always let the sub breathe through their nose
Ball gags block mouth breathing. A blocked nose or feeling of panic can lead to breathing difficulties. Never use a ball gag if you have a cold, allergies, or shortness of breath.
Be aware of saliva and swallowing problems
A ball gag stimulates saliva production. Some subs drool heavily or choke easily.
Limit the wearing time
Never use a ball gag for longer than 10–15 minutes without a break, especially with beginners. Allow the jaw to rest between sessions and check for pain, stiffness, or bruising.
