Anal plug

Definition
An anal plug (also known as a butt plug) is a toy that is specially designed to be inserted anally and remain there for a shorter or longer period of time. The plug can be used for sexual stimulation, training of the sphincter muscle, preparation for anal sex, or as part of a BDSM dynamic such as control, humiliation, ownership, or extended playtime.

Explanation of anal plugs

Anal plugs come in all shapes, sizes, and materials—from small beginner plugs to heavy metal ones with crystal tails, vibration, or long wear time. What they have in common is their anatomical shape: a tapered top (for insertion), a wider shaft (for anchoring), and a safe, wide base (so that the plug cannot disappear inside).

In BDSM, an anal plug is often used as:

  • a sign of ownership (e.g., as an order: “wear it all day”)
  • part of a game of humiliation or control
  • preparation for anal sex or punishment
  • mental submission (“you know it’s there”)
  • symbolic closure of the body (slave tightness, shift in focus)

For some, it is primarily physically pleasurable—for others, the mental aspect plays a greater role.

There is an important difference between an anal plug and an anal rod or dildo. A plug is meant to stay in place, a dildo to move around. Plugs therefore always have a wider base – for safety and comfort.

Safety & points of attention

An anal plug may seem harmless, but misuse can lead to pain, damage, or even medical emergencies. Therefore:

Always use a plug with a flared base

Without a wide base, the plug can slip in completely, requiring medical removal.

Use sufficient lubricant

The anal canal does not produce its own lubrication. Choose a lubricant that is compatible with the material (water-based for silicone toys).

Build up slowly

Start with small sizes and practice breathing, relaxation, and patience. Force or rushing can lead to tears or anxiety reactions.

Clean thoroughly

Wash before and after use with warm water and soap or a toy cleaner. Avoid wooden or porous materials.

Be careful with metal plugs during temperature play or electro play

Metal conducts heat and electricity. Be careful with hot liquids, candle wax, or electricity in combination with plugs.

Never use toys with loose parts or sharp edges.

Check the plug beforehand for cracks, loose gemstones, or irritating edges.
